Fixing and Troubleshooting Your Own Wii – DIY Guide

by Ben on February 16, 2010

When your Nintendo Wii breaks it can be a very frustrating occurrence. It may seem impossible to fix, and there are barely any certified repair centers. Unless you’re willing to wait 6 weeks to have your Wii fixed you’re going to have to fix it yourself.

Now I know you may at first think this is an impossible task for an amateur, but it’s nowhere near as hard as it seems. It’s actually easy with a well written guide.

The first thing you should know about fixing your Wii is how to diagnose the problem. This may seem like common sense but a lot of people just start tinkering with their console without knowing what’s really wrong with it. Taking things apart without any knowledge on what’s actually broken is relying on luck and should be avoided. Instead you should research what is specifically wrong with your Wii.

For example, say your screen freezes in the middle of a game. You first need to identify whether the problem is in the Wii or if it’s actually the game with the problem. If the game is the problem then you don’t want to continue using that disc to prevent any damage to your console. You can usually exchange damaged games for new, perfectly fine games.

However, if the problem resides in the console you don’t want to load any games into it until it’s fixed to prevent your games from further damage.

When your Wii remote, or Wiimote, isn’t responding figuring out where the problem is helps a lot when trying to fix it. Are your movements not being recognized by the console? Is the remote failing to properly sync? Are any of the buttons stuck?

As you can see fixing your Wii doesn’t require any prior knowledge, it’s all about figuring out what’s wrong, and then using an easy, already tested solution.
